Boston’s MBTA Takes NextBus System Wide
“We are taking the guesswork out of the daily commute for thousands of people who rely on T service across the region,’’ Governor Deval Patrick said in a statement. The MBTA is helping take the guesswork out of using public transportation by providing riders with the technological capability to determine when buses will arrive at any given stop.
NextBus has been working on a pilot project with the MBTA since 2009, covering just 5 routes. The success of that project convinced the transit agency’s leadership to expand real-time passenger information to more than 1000 buses on all 147 routes that serve 47 cities and towns in Massachusetts.
The new NextBus implementation serves the MBTA’s objective of making life easier for their riders, as Richard Davey, MBTA general manager, said in a phone interview with the Boston Globe:
“Any time we can get information into our customers’ hands — that just improves their experience on the MBTA.’’
Numerous software apps have been built by creative developers for a variety of mobile devices and are showcased on the MBTA website. These will make riders commuting and travel experience even better.
